Selecting a Portland Oregon CPA firm is an important decision for your local small business. You want an experienced firm that will provide individual attention and take the time to answer your questions. A new or smaller business may not have the internal staff to build a "management team". That's where your Portland CPA comes in - advising you in the areas of accounting, computers, finance, and taxes - so you can run your business. Working one-on-one with smaller Oregon business owners is this firm's specialty.
Services
Everyone simply cannot do everything well! A small business owner knows their business inside & out, but may not be aware of critical accounting & tax issues that can disrupt your local business. An owner should surround themselves with a "management team", who can advise them in areas of accounting & tax (my Portland CPA firm), legal (from a local attorney, as CPA's cannot provide legal advice), insurance, estate & financial planning. My Portland CPA firm can help with your small business accounting & income tax issues!
I am an Oregon certified public accountant and a longtime member of the American Institute of CPA's and Oregon Society of CPA's. I take 40 hours of continuing professional education each year. I have a BS in accounting from Oregon State, with a minor in computer science. I grew up here, was educated here, and raised my family here.
OK--You started up your business on a shoestring budget, but now you are so busy with production and filling orders, the bookkeeping just isn't getting done on time or correct! ALL YOU DO is write checks and make bank deposits. Hire ADP or Paychex to do payroll. Then let your CPA do the rest. I use Quickbooks software to provide you a complete detail of all transactions, an accountants compilation report (an option, if needed for your banker), Balance Sheet, Statement of Income, and graphical analysis.
As a client of this CPA firm, you will have your own personal CPA. You will be able to call or email him and ask 5-10 minute questions during the year for free. Year-end tax planning brochures & emails are offered at no charge. Several of my clients came to me from larger accounting & tax preparation firms - saying that they were not getting enough individual & year-round attention.

Mr. Taylor exceeded our expectations when we sought his guidance for our personal and business finances. After using a different Agent for a few years, it became apparent we weren't receiving the proper considerations and it was necessary to find somebody with a more specialized skill set. Garland has that skill set and more. His ability to explain such complex nuances in Tax Law in a manner that allowed us to truly understand how to best help him to help ourselves was worth every penny. We will definitely be using his services moving forward and encourage others to engage with him to fortify your financial health.

Garland Taylor is my third accountant in 31 years in business. This is my first Yelp review and I signed up just to let others know there really is a great choice for an accountant in Portland. Garland is the perfect mix of attention to detail and pleasant to work with every March (five years now). If you use Quickbooks for your business he is also very knowledgeable with their software. Do yourself a favor and give him a try; you will be happy.

I was so impressed with Garland, I was inclined to start a Yelp account. I actually ended up not using his services, let me tell you why. I made an appointment with Garland for a free 30 minute consultation. I had all my paperwork ready to go, but after reviewing all my info, we decided that it would be more financially sound for a small business such as mine to just do their own taxes.
But before I left, Garland provided me with more information than I could dream of. Taxes I didn't know I needed to pay, he explained estimated taxes, told me what I need to track, and gave me lots of literature. I will definitely recommend him, and if I do ever need the services of a CPA, you know who I'll be calling.

Accountancy zen -- is that even possible? Regardless, Garland's experience, practical advice, and solid communication make me a happy client. You'll probably interview 3-5 accountants during your search; these points differentiate Garland: - He does the work personally (no 'sweatshop' of bookkeepers on staff) - Other software/web clientele -- he's technology fluent. - Personable and direct communication.
Look up tough issues like S Corp compensation before interviewing accountants. Garland was the only CPA I met that thoroughly explained the issue, said what documentation you'd need if you faced an audit, and discussed common approaches and risks. This is the type of accounting advice you're paying for, not some simple 'rule of thumb' you can find on Google. Overall, Garland left me feeling calm and confident about taxes and miscellaneous state and county filings. Definitely a 5 star professional that should be on your list to interview.
